Who Will Rock Venice This Year ?
If summertime sadness hits you on the last day of August, there's a cure distraction, one of the most anticipated events in the cinema world Venice Film Festival unveils its 73rd edition on August 31st. The international film festival, directed this year by Alberto Barbera will run until September 10th with an impressive lineup.
Twenty movies are selected to compete for the Golden Lion , the festival's top prize, and the stakes are high. Golden Lion proved to be a ticket to Oscar, as two latest best picture winners "Spotlight" and "Birdman" had their world premiere at Venice. 'La La Land', a musical by the "Whiplash" director Damien Chazelle, opens the festival. Thriller "Nocturnal Animals" by fashion designer Tom Ford is competing as well, along with Wim Wenders, Terrence Malick and other directors.
Mel Gibson premieres at Venice Festival this year with"Hacksaw Ridge", an anticipated WW II drama out of the competition list. The festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema. This year is a great opportunity to enjoy once again Woody Allen's "Manhattan" , Kurosawa's "Seven samurai", "Scent of a woman", "Stalker" and other classics.
Judging by the last year's surprise winner "From afar", a Venezuelan movie, that got the main competition's top prize, the festival is an unpredicted, refined treat for the global cinephiles. Let's see, what this year's edition prepared.
